“I expected to see a hole in the ground…”

That’s the comment we hear from many visiting friars. But with the imposing, noble front of the Priory before us, our progress and our progress reports become daily more exciting!

Work on the Priory continues but the pace has dramatically accelerated! Every single day, there are exciting new developments. Now that the building is entirely closed in, the work on the interior changes daily. Plumbing (eighty per cent), electrical (forty per cent) and HVAC (heating and air conditioning – fifty per cent) are moving along. Drywall installation has begun. A crowning moment occurred on April 17 with the installation of the cross on the Chapel roof.

Window and door installation is complete. The plywood on the roof is entirely installed. With these two significant landmarks, we will have a Dry-In Ceremony on May 11 to celebrate. Fr. Brian Mulcahy, Prior Provincial and Fr. Dominic Izzo, OP will join Fr. Luke Clark, Fr. Joseph Scordo and Fr. Stephen Alcott for this event. At the Dry In, we will celebrate along with all the construction and architectural representatives who have worked so hard to make this dream a reality.

The exterior brickwork began this month and is coming along nicely, with about twenty percent complete.

Every day we thank God for the blessings on our Priory, for the construction workers on site and for our many donors who continue to contribute so generously to this important project. We still have $2.1 million to raise. We trust, with God’s grace and the help of so many good people, that we will meet our goals!

Work proceeds at an amazing pace! Framing for the first floor is nearly finished. The stairs from the first to second floor are installed and framed in. The floor joists for the second floor are in the process of being installed and the framing is in place for the Recreation Room on the South side of the Priory and the East side Friar’s Rooms. We are nearly done with all the concrete sub-flooring – the north side of the building being the last to be poured. Placement has begun for the cinderblock under-layer for the entrance to the Crypt and brickwork has begun on the North side retaining wall. On the Chapel roof, the felt has been put in place, the roof shingles awaiting the rest of the roof framing. Fill dirt is going in around the exterior of the building and in the courtyard. We are nearing the final decision-making stage for the St. Vincent Ferrer Columbarium and those plans will be presented in the near future.

Weekly Update – Now that the foundation work is predominantly done, the building is daily more visible above ground. The Chapel roof trusses were installed late last week and the Chapel under-roofing is nearly complete. The walls of the main Priory building are in the process of being placed – especially noticeable are the friar’s rooms on the first floor level of the East side of the building. The main entrance along Midmont Lane and refectory room are framed in, as are the guest and parlor rooms. Behind the scenes, fundraising continues. We are $2.1M short of our goal. Fr. Dominic Izzo, OP visits St. Thomas Aquinas Parish next week and will meet with various donors. Plans for the new crypt – St. Vincent Ferrer Columbarium – are in the process of finalization.
